Just like all other wedding ceremonies, Jewish weddings also follow a number of customs and traditions. These customs form an integral part of the cultural legacy passed down from one generation to another. Jewish wedding dances are no exception and are a vital part of the wedding. Therefore, even in modern day Jewish weddings, couples include traditional dances to pay homage to their age old customs and traditions.
The Hora dance is a great way to start your wedding celebration. Whether you choose to have in the beginning of the evening or later, it is always a great way to get all your family and friends on the dance floor. The beauty of the dance is that you don’t have to be a great dancer or know it at all--just hold hands and start with the foot movement that includes kicks and other grapevine like steps in a circle.
One of my favorite ways to start the Hora dance at a wedding is to start it right after your first dance, invite your guests to the dance floor and in seconds you have a full crowd of followers dancing and celebrating with you.
You can use the wedding band or the DJ you hired for the dinner to perform the Hora set or if you want to be more traditional, you can always hire a Klezmer band to perform this part of the evening. I have done it many times with great success.
No matter how modern and unique your wedding is, going back to the old traditions and dancing the Hora will be a great way to get the party going!
